Anthony Perseveres wasn’t supposed to get accepted to a top university and obtain a college degree. Most people didn’t even expect him to live to the age of twenty-four—let alone get married, father children, and play an essential role in their lives. But Perseveres, a black Latino who grew up in a rough Bronx projects, did all of these things and more, surprising even himself. He managed to do it even though he had an absentee father and a mother who abused substances during a crack epidemic that swirled all around him.
